That'll teach John for getting "Re-animation for Dummies" out of the library
John isn't thinking straight because of the pharma bender he's on. Doing a lid on top of a snowball is going to end up giving him all sorts of problems that First Dictionary won't ever be able to cope with.
I sure do WONDER if that's also the reason he's carved the letter 'A' into his forehead.

John aka Erwin has put his pet aka Schroeding's cat inside the box. Together with an execution device triggered by an radioactive decay process.
Snowball can now continue in a mixed state of being both, dead and alive, until Erwin reopens the box. (Un?)-fortunately, Schroeding died in the meantime.
John must be friends with the pair who bungled Spot's operation in the corner.

John's just pretending snowball is the kid behind him in math who keeps drawing the hieroglyphics on the back of his head with a sharpie marker.
Freezer
A freezer is a cold place for storing food.
When John is finished sealing the lid, he will put the rest of Mother's head back into the freezer.
The lid helps Snowball not to get out.
