Actually we slow down to look at all of them. We can't tell if they're grisly until we've had a good look.
LOL! So true...Although gawking really annoys me, especially when you're trying to get somewhere and everyone slows down traffic for the dumbest things e.e

I always thought it was "gawp", but I'm probably wrong.
As a point of pride, I refuse to EVER slow down to look at an accident, but i am certainly gawking like crazy in snatches, or out of the corner of my eye. And, yes, it is horribly disappointing if it is not grisly.
Turning us all into ghoulish, gawky (foolish), gawkish (clumsy) gawkers (ninnies).
To gawk is to stare
Pedestrians in the street slow down to gawk
at the beautiful red car with its young passengers on their way to their final restingplace
Mother used gawk in many forms. My favorite, "What are you gawken at." It's gawking at a little faster pace.
I really admire your way of seeing this world. This dark humor of yours is really needed in this era of the Hanged Man. The bittersweet laugh is the only pleasure that many of us can get these days.
A delightful slant on dictionary enrichment at this site. I am doing something slightly similar. All the best.
